Oversleep vs Undersleep

Have you ever heard someone saying that it took him/her few hours in the night to get into sleep?
And you might have also heard few saying they could simply get into sleep in minutes.

Have you ever wondered what could be the reason behind this phenomenon? Well! I thought about it and postulated some interesting points.

Let's discuss few minutes about this and then will get into the details. There are several ways people opt to get sleep.

  1. Few do some activity and slowly fall asleep.
  2. Few lie in the bed and starts thinking about something and slowly fall asleep.
  3. Few just lie on the bed and get into sleep in few minutes.
  4. Few others do some activity and fell asleep for some time and again do the activity then fall asleep and repeat it for sometimes and finally fall asleep.
If you observe all the kinds, you can find two things. 1. You either consciously do some activity which will prevent you to go sleep. 2. You don't do anything and lie in the bed just to get into sleep.

Our focus in more on point as, if one consciously wants to avoid sleep they can do it and after a certain time they fall asleep without conscious effort.

Now we talk about case 2, where you want to sleep but only few can do it in minutes and few takes hours to do it. So, my postulates here are 1. Oversleep 2. Undersleep.

Every creature in this world needs to sleep and their duration of sleep depends on species to spices and within species to it depends on one being to another. Let's consider only humans for this experiment.

These postulates are purely subjective and can't generalise for all.

Undersleep: If a person needs let's say 7 hours per day of sleep. On any day if sleeps only 6 hours, he would 1 negative hours in his kitty. If he sleeps 8 hours on any day he gets a positive hour in his bag.
Let's consider past 5 years of his life in this calculation. If you calculate his duration of sleep in this period, ideally he should have slept 365*5*7 = 12775 hours. If you calculate his actual duration of sleep you get some hours and assume which is 12500 hours in this case. Now his undersleep value is 12775-12500=275 hours.

Oversleep: If the same guy's actual duration of sleep is 13200 hours(assume) then his oversleep value would be 13200 - 12775 = 425 hours.

Now once you calculate this value we need to consider one more parameter here which is "Cutoff".

Cutoff: In both the cases the guy will have a cutoff value. Let's say A's cutoff is 100 hours in undersleep and 150 hours in oversleep. As long as your actual duration of sleep fall under this cutoff you will get into sleep in as usual time. If you cross undersleep's cutoff you start getting into sleep early and if you cross oversleep's cutoff you will start getting delayed to get into sleep.
